Soviet-American War, 1995-1996

In 1991 at the United Nations, Premier Medvev made an ultimatum, either the US cede back Alaska and completely withdraw all military forces by or before May 9th, 1995, or the Soviet Union will be forced to take matters into their own hands. Obviously the US refused, but its inability to eliminate, track down, or even cripple Medvev's spy ring worried many in the Federal Government. In 1993, Medvev surprised the West by seeking peace and cooperation between East and West, returning to the Détente of the 1970's. Medvev also helped negotiate the reopening of trade between OPEC and the United States in Moscow. After months of talks, OPEC agreed to trade with the US again. A month later, Medvev met with President Archer Jones in Reykjavík, Iceland to negotiate a new arms limitation treaty, SALT III, between leaders of the US, Britain, the USSR, and China. During talks, two Soviet Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star) anti-ballistic missile satellites began geostationary orbit over the United States. The Red Star satellites (two were only built and used) were basically a nuclear warhead that would detonate in orbit to destroy any ICBM fired at the USSR; it was the Union's counter to the US's planned Star Wars system. During the signing of the treaty one of Medvev's aids ran up and informed him of a coup attempt back in Moscow and a rouge officer planing to use the Red Star satellites to isolate Medvev in Iceland. Medvev replayed with a shocked "CHTO!?" ("WHAT!?" in Russian), catching the attention of all. He then informed the other leaders of these events and the promise of catching the traitors and having them trained for war crimes. Medvev quickly left, stating he had some "political reorganizing" to do. When his plane reached British airspace, the satellites detonated creating an EMP that destroyed the electrical systems across the North American continent and damaging or dismantling any other satellites near by. The black out caused severe damage to the military. After a few days later, NORAD began to come back online, though many areas over the US were still blacked out. On May 9th, the US was shocked when airstrikes were reported on the Gulf coasts, followed by Cuban and Nicaraguan troops invading Florida. Before the US could mobilized to combat the invasion, Soviet and Chinese troops attacked hours later on the West Coast, Hawaii, and Alaska, and Soviet troops made landings on the East Coast. It was the start of the Soviet-American War. The invasion shocked the world and President Jones who was led to believe Medvev was a man of peace. It was now clear that this was simple a perfect facade. During the war, the Soviets established puppet states in Hawaii and the occupied areas on the mainland. The war lasted until 1996, when the United Nations, fearing the escalation of the conflict, mediated peace. In exchange for peace, the US and the USSR would both agree to limiting their nuclear stockpiles by 2000. On May 9th, 1996, President Archer Jones and Premier Dmitri Medvev signed the SALT III treaty and the Treaty of Geneva, officially ending the war. The Soviets would abolish the puppet states and cede back all occupied territories to the US and abandon its claims to Alaska. Medvev also agreed to step down as General Secretary of the Communist Party, but he still remained the Premier of the Soviet Union. In 1997, Medvev began to reform the Soviet government. The Supreme Soviet voted on a new democratic constitution.
