After a stroke, Lincoln decided against running for a forth term. Instead the National Union Party nominated Ulysses S. Grant. Horace Greeley was nominated by the Democrats, and John C. Frémont ran under the Radical Democracy Party. Greeley disputed how the Civil War was being handled, but wanted to see it through to the end while Frémont promised to immediately end the war. Another point of issue during the election was the Great Northwestern Indian War (1867-1874). Dakota, Colorado, Oregon, and the Montana, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Washington Territories was intensive fighting between locals and the various Native tribes. The war started when the US began withdrawing Federal troops out the areas to fight in the Civil War, and the sudden increase of settlers, mainly Union Army veterans and German immigrants. Confederate agents were quick to exploit the situation, and soon the regain fell into anarchy.
The election ended up contested, but Congress ultimately awarded the election to Grant. Greeley died three weeks after the election with his votes going to his running mate, Benjamin Gratz Brown.
