Description

On March 5th, 2014, a nuclear warhead was detonated in Washington, D.C. eliminating much of the federal government. By April, without direction, the states started leaving the union. By June, the states began forming new nations. Several former members of the US government, military, and several state governments met in Chicago to reunite the United States. The representatives from the states began arguing and various regional groups began fighting, and in response to the "Chicago Government", representatives from the former Confederate States of Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Missouri met in Richmond to reform the Confederate States. The New England states followed the south's example and met in Boston to form the New England Union. California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington joined to form the California Republic. Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah formed the Rocky Mountain Federation. Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma recreated the Republic of Texas. Soon Kansas joined the Confederacy, and alarmed by the rapid consolidation of the states into new nations, causing panic in Chicago. In an effort to reunite the country, military units and volunteers loyal to the United States invaded Kansas and Virginia. Hawaii was spared much of the devastation happening on the mainland due to its location, but its population skyrocketed as refugees fled from the violence. Hawaii was also used by China as a shipping point for refugees heading to China. Hawaii never really wanted to declare independence, instead it wanted to simply wait out the civil war and rejoin the US after the fighting had stopped. On June 17th, 2016, the remaining warring factions meet in Columbus to sign the Treaty of Columbus, were each of the new nations would end their fighting with each other and recognize each other as independent nations. Seeing that the United States' government was left with the Midwest, Hawaii choose to remain independent and signed the treaty. Many of the refugees eventually went back to the mainland, most either settling in California or the Confederacy, but not all. 600,000 of the refugees were given citizenship out of the roughly 2 million refugees. This put a serious strain on the Hawaiian economy and it resources, so much so that the National Legislature argued throughout the republic's entire existence on whether they should deport all the refugees or join the California Republic so it could absorb the burden. In 2024, Chinese dictator (and former refugee who had passed through Hawaii) Joseph E. Taylor visited Hawaii and met with the Hawaiian president to try to gain diplomatic recognition for his regime. The meeting was widely criticized due to Taylor's extremely brutal regime, but was a success for Taylor. The Republic of Hawaii and the Chinese Federation had established diplomatic and economic ties. Taylor agreed to accept 50,000 refugees and gave the Hawaiian government a massive loan. By 2025, the CF was Hawaii's second largest trading partners and Hawaii became China's fourth largest trading partner (mostly by acting as a third party to buy and ship arms and ammunition to China as a means to circumvent sanctions on Taylor's regime). Also in 2024 was the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. This lead to increased tensions between Hawaii and Japan and sanction against Japan. Eventually in 2026, this boiled over, as Japan using the sanctions as a means to declare war and invaded Hawaii. After a short few months of warfare, the Republic of Hawaii officially surrendered. The Neo-Japanese Empire reformed the nation as the Kingdom of Hawaii, a puppet state under the direct control of the Imperial Family. Despite surrendering, large factions of the Hawaiian military fled into the interior of the islands and continued a guerrilla war until 2055, when the last of the guerrilla units were defeated by the Neo-Imperial Japanese Army. Joseph Taylor saw this as a massive political opportunity and using a fleet of retrofitted cargo ships launched Operation Aloha, a massive evacuation of the islands of most of Hawaii's economic centers, military hardware, hard currency, military personnel, government officials, and nearly one million civilians and their belongings. Most were resettled in the Liaodong Peninsula giving rise to it later name Little Hawaii. Operation Aloha was a success, both in its execution and by giving Taylor's regime diplomatic legitimacy and allow it to establish diplomatic relations with Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Canada, California, and the CSA.
