After the US collapsed into civil war, the globe was thrown into chaos. The already fragile global economy collapsed and many formerly prosperous nations found themselves completely unprepared for the severity of the crisis. In Japan, unemployment rose to 67% by 2016, and a series of constant change in the Diet saw the nationalist resurge. An ultranationalist party, the Imperial Restoration Party, managed to win near control of the Diet in a sweeping emergency election. Using the economic chaos in Japan as reason to ban all other parties in order to stabilize the country, the IRP managed to quickly seize control of the nation. The IRP put people to work by re-militarizing the country and invade foreign nations to gain raw material and markets for its economy. In 2026, with the outbreak of the Third Sino-Japanese War (2026-2029), the Neo-Japanese Empire sent the 9th Fleet to Haiphong, Ho Chi Minh City, and Sihanoukville, to give the nations of Vietnam and Cambodia an ultimatum to surrender to the Japanese. The Imperial Navy managed to take control of Ho Chi Minh City rather easily and from their, used the city as a base to bring in the Imperial Army. Using this as an excuse, the Chinese Federation invade Vietnam, and was able to win control over Hanoi and Haiphong. The remnants of the Vietnamese government collapsed and the Japanese took control over the nation. Cambodia and Laos fell soon after. Despite Japanese propaganda, the Imperial Neo-Japanese Army has been fighting a prolonged guerrilla war since 2030. Despite this, many more locals are collaborating with the Japanese; during the Fourth Sino-Japanese War (2045-2058), the Indochinese Union invaded northern Vietnam in an attempt to retake it with a highly organized and equipped fighting force of some 23 million. The war ended in a stalemate with the Indochinese Union in ruins from the fighting.
