Based of a what-if question that popped into my mind. What if the US never finished the atomic bomb, and ended up fighting on the Japanese Home Islands? What if the Soviets invaded Hokkaido? What would the world be like?
-----
After WWII (1939-1947), the US found itself with the Soviet Union as its main threat. With an ideological rival, the US adopted a policy of containment to stop the spread of communism. While the Korean War (1950-1953), the Inter-German War (1950-1951), and the Japanese War (1951-1952) ended in stalemates, the spread of communism was stopped. During the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962), the world almost witnessed nuclear war. The US was preparing to invade Cuba to remove the Soviet missiles and the communist government so close to the US, the invasion was stopped at the last minuet. In 1965, the US made Puerto Rico a state after an extremely close referendum. During the Mexican Civil War (1965-1966) broke out, the US feared the communist would take control of the nation, so it intervened. After the US entered Iran to in 1979 to keep the Shah in power, the Arab nations and the rest of OPEC began an oil embargo in protest. The embargo heavily crippled the US economy. The same year, the Sandinistas took power in Nicaragua. They sent funds to communist guerrillas in El Salvador. After taking control of El Salvador, the communist renamed the nation the National People's Republic of the Revolutionary State, feeling the name El Salvador was counter-revolutionary.

After the US intervention in the Mexican Civil War (1965-66), perhaps you should have the United States annex Baja California, making it either part of the State of California or naming it South California which in turn would mean renaming California to North California. The single California idea might be easier as there would be no need for you to edit the US flag.
